What is a Lambda Sensor?

The lambda sensor is an oxygen sensor located in the exhaust manifold that measures the amount of residual oxygen in the exhaust gases after combustion. It measures the oxygen in the exhaust gases and sends the data to the ECU, which regulates the amount of fuel to inject for the next combustion. The ideal (stoichiometric) ratio is 14.7:1, meaning 14.7 parts of air for 1 part of fuel. A lean mixture has a value greater than 14.7, indicating too little fuel and too much air, while a rich mixture has a value less than 14.7, indicating too much fuel and too little air. This component is important as it allows the ECU to maintain the optimal mixture for engine performance, fuel consumption, and emissions.
