Why is Timing Important When Changing the Belt or Chain?

When changing the belt or chain, it is essential to correctly realign the engine components to ensure that the valves open and close at the right time, and that ignition and injection are synchronised with the thermodynamic cycle (intake, compression, explosion, exhaust): incorrect timing can cause power loss, high consumption, or even failure to start. Timing is adjusted by aligning references on the engine flywheel, the camshaft pulley, and the chain (or belt), which must be tensioned according to the manufacturer's specifications. After assembly, the engine should be turned by hand with a key for 2 to 3 complete turns to ensure there are no unusual resistances. If the timing is wrong, and the valves and pistons occupy the same space at the wrong time, they collide causing severe damage: this is referred to as an "interference engine". If it is just incorrectly installed, the car may operate unsatisfactorily but without severe mechanical damage.
