Is a timing belt or chain better for a car? The chain or belt transmits the engine's power to the movement. Be careful, as the belt is not the auxiliary one (the one for the air conditioning or alternator, to clarify). No, it's the one for the crankshaft. The belt, being made of rubber, is quieter, cheaper, and many manufacturers have switched to this technology. Few engines still use chains, although there is now a trend reversal back to chains. This is because they are more compact engines with higher power, which means the risk of the belt breaking is constant. However, the rubber belt can break suddenly, while the chain is much more durable. Manufacturers, for purely cost reasons, have put a large number of engines at risk, as a broken belt can cause significant damage to the engine, often very serious. The chain can rattle, but it rarely breaks and does not damage the engine.
