UPS uses software called Orion, which calculates routes preferring almost exclusively right turns, even if this slightly lengthens the journey. Why does it work? It saves fuel: you do not remain stationary with the engine running waiting for a gap in oncoming traffic. There are fewer accidents: left turns are responsible for a large number of accidents at junctions. Consequently, reduced insurance costs; lower CO2 emissions. It seems counterintuitive, but it leads to smoother travel. With this software, left turns have been reduced to 10% of the total, resulting in huge savings in fuel, miles, and operating costs: The YouTuber tested it on his own route and calculated a time saving of 7/8 minutes a day, one litre of fuel a week: 50 hours in a school year (taking his son to school) and 40 litres (also in a school year). This is a solid and counterintuitive principle: the logic of the shortest route is not always the most efficient: UPS has demonstrated this on an industrial scale.
