When the solenoid receives the electrical signal, it pushes on the electric motor to engage the pinion, which connects to the engine and allows it to reach the necessary RPM for ignition. When the engine starts, the starter motor receives a signal to retract the pinion, allowing the crankshaft to rotate freely.
