How to Replace TPMS Sensors with Simple Tools
Model: (Various brands) Various
Video tutorial
Let's see how to replace TPMS pressure sensors with simple tools at home, without completely removing the tyre from the rim. If a tyre is slowly losing air and there are no cuts or punctures, the culprit is often the TPMS sensor. You will need a hammer, fine sandpaper, a torque wrench, a relearning tool, soapy water spray, and the new TPMS sensor (if it is simply flat, keep in mind that sensors usually go flat around the same time). It is not necessary to completely dismount the tyre; break the bead only on the outer side of the rim where the sensor is located; this way, the tyre remains mounted on the inner side and does not lose balance. Lower the shoulder to expose the sensor, which is secured with an 11 or 12 mm nut on the outer side of the rim, unscrew the sensor and remove it (be careful not to drop it inside the rim!). Use fine sandpaper to remove corrosion and dirt from the rim where the new sensor's seal will sit. Insert the new sensor from the inner side of the rim (you can find a kit of 4 on fruugo.it with code 413181363-873281405 for £32.95 + £7.49 shipping), position the washer, tighten the nut to 6/8 Nm, inflate the tyre, and spray soapy water around the stem to ensure there are no leaks. You will then need to have the new sensors recognised by the vehicle using a relearning tool to activate the sensors and write the IDs into the ECU.
