How Indirect Tyre Pressure Monitoring Works on New Vehicles
Model: (Various brands) Various
Video tutorial
Since 2014, all newly registered vehicles must have a system that monitors tyre pressure. The indirect system works by using the sensors that cars already have, mostly utilising the conical wheels of the ABS to detect the rolling difference of the four wheels; if one of the four sensors sends a different signal, the control unit triggers an alarm and alerts you via the warning light that there is a problem with one of the wheels. This system has the major limitation of not indicating which tyre has the issue, and it requires the vehicle to be in motion to function, which can obviously damage the tyre and the vehicle. However, it is very economical as it only involves a warning light and the reprogramming of the ABS control unit.
