Symptoms of a faulty steering angle sensor

The steering angle sensor is crucial for safety systems such as electronic stability control, lane keeping assistance, and traction control. The sensor is located in the steering, behind the steering wheel, often integrated into the steering column, and measures the position and movements of the steering wheel, sending data to the vehicle's safety systems. The main symptoms are: noisy steering, excessive play in the steering wheel, incorrect alignment, the car tending to pull to one side, inconsistent lane assist, traction control warning light on, steering warning light on the dashboard, stability control (ESC) disabled, and the car limiting performance. The sensor is accessible by removing the steering wheel and column, so if you have some experience and skill, it is a job that can be done on your own, provided you always disconnect the battery before working on it.
