In this video, see how to replace the gas struts on a Volkswagen Passat B5: open the tailgate and position a hydraulic jack (or another support) under the tailgate to prevent it from falling during replacement. Insert a flat screwdriver under the retaining ring that secures the strut to the tailgate, and gently release the ring to disconnect the strut. Repeat the operation on the other side. Move on to installing the new struts by first connecting the body side, snapping the retaining ring into the hinge seat; then connect the tailgate side, fitting the strut and securing it with the retaining ring. Now carefully remove the jack, and test the tailgate by opening and closing it several times.
