How to Repair the Sunroof Drain of a Volkswagen Passat

Clogged sunroof drains are a common issue in older vehicles, such as this 2008 Volkswagen Passat: Water enters and is channeled through four tubes, one for each corner, draining it underneath the car. If these tubes become clogged, water accumulates and overflows inside the car, wetting the floor and the roof lining. Open the sunroof; in the front and rear corners of the frame, you will find holes (usually with a small plastic conduit) that are the drain inlets. Clean this area thoroughly, then unblock the tubes. The safest method is to gently insert a flexible wire into the drain; you will feel when it passes an obstruction: then move it back and forth to remove it, and pour some water into the drain to check that it flows quickly underneath the car. Alternatively, you could use a vacuum cleaner to pull out the obstruction instead of pushing it further in. You can also try using compressed air, but at a very low pressure, no more than 1/2 bar.
