What TSI Engines Mean and How They Work in Volkswagen

The acronym TSI (and its Audi variant TFSI) is a cornerstone of Volkswagen's engine technology: it stands for "Turbocharged Stratified Injection". In short, it is a petrol engine that combines three cutting-edge technologies. Early engines had both a turbocharger and a supercharger, but over time the technology has evolved and simplified for cost and emissions reasons, leading to the removal of the supercharger and the use of only the turbocharger, often with variable geometry. Today, TSI is primarily a marketing brand that identifies modern petrol engines that are turbocharged and have direct injection, which, if well maintained and with frequent oil changes using recommended specification oils, are brilliant, enjoyable to drive, and efficient.
