How to Restore Rusty Bumpers on a Volkswagen Beetle

On this Beetle, the original bumpers have already been replaced with aftermarket ones, which tend to rust more quickly: rust forms bubbles and unsightly spots. This method does not restore a perfect chrome finish, but significantly improves the appearance at a low cost. First, use a fine steel wool pad soaked in soap (like common pot scrubbers). Wet both the bumper and the pad thoroughly and scrub vigorously but without excessive force on the rusty areas. The pad will remove most of the surface rust and dirt. Rinse thoroughly and dry immediately with care. It is not a perfect solution: rust leaves small holes in the chrome, but to slow down the return of rust, apply a protective product immediately after drying: chrome wax, light oil (WD-40), or a protective metal spray.
