Today's guide will show you the steps to remove and replace the timing belt on a Volkswagen Golf 2.0 TDI; for this type of engine, the belt should be replaced every 5 years or 112,000 miles. First, lift the vehicle and remove the front right wheel and the wheel arch liner; disconnect the alternator belt and undo the bolts of the crankshaft pulley to remove it. At this point, remove the engine mount and the timing cover to access the belt; take reference points on the engine block to remove and replace the belt, installing the original one.
