First, listen for rattling noises at startup: this indicates that the chain has stretched, and if you open the engine, you may see that the chain has play at the top, meaning the tensioner at the bottom is no longer functioning, and the chain could slip, causing the engine to go out of phase and bend the valves. The engine warning light should also illuminate, indicating a problem: during diagnosis, it will signal timing, camshaft, or crankshaft sensor issues: it is the timing chain. When replacing the chain, it is advisable to also replace the water pump, which is located in a very difficult position, so it is certainly worth changing.
