How to solve the problem of the hood on an Audi TT

In this video, we see how to solve the well-known problem of the convertible top on an Audi TT: the roof gets stuck in the open or closed position and no longer responds to commands; often an error message appears on the instrument panel. The cause is not a serious mechanical failure, but the oxidation of a potentiometer (a position sensor) inside the motor that controls the locking mechanism of the trunk. In fact, when the roof is stored, a panel in the trunk opens and closes to make room for it: the oxidized potentiometer sends the wrong signal to the computer, which thinks the panel is stuck, and therefore locks the entire roof system for safety to prevent damage. Let's see how to solve it, even if temporarily: open the trunk, locate the two mechanical arms that control the cover flap, and gently grasp one of the mechanical arms (or the flap itself) with one hand; move it gently for a few centimeters to move the potentiometer and remove the superficial oxidation from the electrical contacts, then return to the driver's seat and try to operate the roof with the switch: very often it will start working normally again. Of course, the definitive solution is to replace the defective potentiometer as soon as possible!
