How to Replace the Battery in the BMW 5 Series E60

The battery in the BMW 5 Series E60 is located in the trunk, above the right wheel well, behind a carpeted cover. There are plastic clips to remove. First, disconnect the negative cable (the black one) and move it away from the terminal; then disconnect the positive cable (the red one). At the bottom, there is a mounting bracket that secures it, with two 13mm bolts to completely remove. Be careful when removing: the battery is very heavy. Carefully position the new battery in the compartment, reattach the mounting bracket, and reconnect the cables in reverse order, first the positive and then the negative. Tighten the nuts securely but do not overtighten. Finally, reinstall the cover panel. On BMWs of this generation, the battery change must be registered with a diagnostic computer to inform the energy management system that the battery has been changed; otherwise, the alternator may not charge correctly, and the battery may have a shorter lifespan.
