How to Replace the Timing Chain on a BMW 320d

Model: BMW Serie 3 E46 - Years 1998-2006

To start, open the hood to get all the necessary space to work. Once the hood is open, begin removing the engine cover, then remove the water pump, alternator, radiator fan, all pulleys, and the two drive belts (you can choose to work from under the car to remove them). After removing all these components, start taking off the cover that protects the timing chain. To remove it, unscrew the bolts around the perimeter of the cover. Once you have finished removing the cover, take off the two chain guides that also serve as tensioners by unscrewing their respective bolts. After this step, you will be free to remove the chain. When you have removed the worn chain, position the new timing chain. Once the new chain is in place, simply follow the steps in reverse to reassemble everything. This way, you will have successfully completed the replacement of your timing chain.
