Removing the Rear Bumper

Model: BMW Serie 3 E36 - Years 1990-2001
Part: Rear bumper

This video shows the removal of the rear bumper from a BMW 3 Series. With the trunk open, locate and unscrew the four 13 mm bolts that secure the inner cover of the trunk. Then, remove the 8 mm screws that hold the inner lining of the rear bumper located near the wheels. Perform the same procedure on both sides. Also, remove and keep the small 13 mm bolts located at the center of the trunk. Now you can start to pull the bumper out by grabbing it from the bottom and working on both sides. It is best to perform this procedure with two people. Now, simply unscrew the plastic bolt that is still holding the bumper to the rest of the car and the screws of the brackets that connect the two parts.

Locate the rubber inspection cap on the back of the headlight and remove it. Disconnect the bulb holder from the headlight and extract the damaged bulbs with the help of a screwdriver. Install the new bulbs (always ensure they are the correct type and size) and insert the bulb holder back into the headlight housing. Reassemble all previously removed parts (headlight cover cap).
