In this video we can see how the self-adjusting clutch cable of the Citroen Berlingo is made: inside the sheath, the cable is not a simple steel wire, but is coiled in a serpentine shape at the end that is attached to the clutch lever on the gearbox. When the clutch pedal is pressed, the serpentine straightens out, temporarily becoming a rigid cable, which transmits the traction to disengage the clutch. When the pedal is released, a return spring pushes the lever back: the serpentine at the end of the cable rewinds and returns to its original shape, always maintaining perfect adjustment. The main advantage is that there is no need to manually adjust the clutch cable play: in fact, as the clutch disc wears out, the system self-compensates, always maintaining the correct and constant pedal travel throughout the life of the disc. Unfortunately, it is a component that can break at a critical point, namely at the end of the serpentine. The symptoms of wear are: abnormal feeling of the pedal and strange noises when operating the clutch.
