If pressing the lock and unlock buttons on the remote key does not open or close the locks, it is likely that the remote battery (model CR 1620) has run out. Replacing it is straightforward and does not require special precautions. Locate the slot on the back of the remote to lever apart the two halves: the half containing the buttons also houses the electronic circuit with the battery.

Once you have removed the circuit, take out the old battery and insert the new one in the same orientation.
