Fiat Panda - Video tutorial

Model: Fiat Panda MK 2, 169 - Years 2003-2012
Part: Shock absorbers
Operation: Replacing the front shock absorbers on Fiat Panda 169

Replacing the front shock absorbers on a Fiat Panda 169 is an operation which, although preferably carried out by professional mechanics, can be done do-it-yourself if equipped with the right tools and a good dose of manual skill. First of all, make sure you have purchased the correct spare parts, it is possible that during disassembly other small spare parts that wear out easily will also have to be replaced, therefore equip yourself with buffers, upper supports, dust covers and the kit to compress the springs. The first step is to lift the car and remove the front tyres. Next, we open the front hood and unscrew the two bolts No. 19 positioned on the upper corners with a jointed wrench, leaving however a last turn of thread without removing it completely. Having done this, go back down and, after having removed the ABS tie rod, undo the two bolts which hold the calliper support and the bolt which holds the connecting rod to the shock absorber. Now the shock absorber is almost free, hold it still with your hand and do the last turn to unscrew the bolts located in the front hood. Once removed, place them on the workbench and the next task will be to remove the springs from the stem. With the compressor kit, now compress the spring (there are kits with different functioning, so carefully read the instructions on the box of the kit you purchased), disassemble the bolt that holds the upper support and remove the spring from the stem. Attention, put the spring in a safe place, if the compressor is not properly hooked it could come free and hurt a lot! Now take the new shock absorber, fix it in a vice and proceed to assemble the new spare parts. First place the buffer and the dust seal along the stem, house the spring still compressed between the two plates and fix the upper support with the fixing bolt. The last operation on the bench will be to loosen the screws of the compression kit, making sure that the spring maintains its position. You can finish the operation by reassembling the shock absorber with the same procedure with which it was removed. The operations listed are the same for the left and right front shock absorbers.
