How to reset the control units and modules in your car

Here is a general procedure to reset the control units and modules in cars, especially older models; it is likely that custom settings will be lost. First, disconnect the negative terminal of the battery and leave it disconnected for at least 15 minutes to allow the control unit to shut down completely. Now, discharge any residual energy by pressing the brake pedal for 10 to 15 seconds. Reconnect the battery terminal. Now turn on the ignition and leave it on for about half a minute, then start the engine and let it idle for 5 minutes, followed by a drive lasting about ten minutes, accelerating smoothly; this completes the adaptation phase. If the warning lights turn off, the reset was successful: it was a temporary issue. If they remain on, you will need to seek professional diagnosis with a specialized scanner.
