The timing belt is a crucial component for the operation and longevity of the engine as it synchronizes the movements of the crankshaft with the camshaft, which in turn controls the movement of the valves. A break in the timing belt could irreparably damage the engine as all components would go out of phase, potentially breaking the connecting rods, bending the valves, puncturing the pistons, and more. According to the vehicle manufacturer, the timing belt should be replaced at 240,000 mi, but it is advisable to consider replacing it around 200,000 mi.
