How the Differential Lock Works on the Mercedes G-Class W463

In this video, we see how the differential lock works on the Mercedes G-Class W463: its electronic differential locking system ensures traction even in extreme conditions. Standard differentials allow the wheels on the same axle to rotate at different speeds, which is very useful in turns; however, on uneven terrain, the wheel with less grip can slip, reducing traction. The differential locks 100% of the rotation difference between the wheels, forcing all to turn at the same speed; this way, it is possible to overcome obstacles where one wheel loses traction. The G-Class has three lockable differentials: one central that distributes power 50% between the front and rear axles, one to lock the rear axle, and one to lock the front axle. When engaging the "off-road" mode, the activation order is "central/rear/front". On extreme terrains (mud, rocks, slopes >30%), all three are used; for snow and gravel, just the central one is sufficient. Never activate them on normal roads, or you risk damaging the transmission. Thanks to the locks, the G-Class can push even with just one wheel in grip, overcoming obstacles unimaginable for other SUVs.
