On the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, the transmission is controlled with the DIRECT SELECT lever located behind the steering wheel (a "satellite" on the right). Before starting, press the brake pedal and hold the Start/Stop button to start the engine.

The current position (P, R, N, D) is indicated on the dashboard display. To engage D (drive), with the brake pressed, push the lever down past the first point of resistance.

For R (reverse), push the lever up. For N (neutral), push the lever up or down and hold it in position for a few seconds. To engage P (park), press the button at the end of the lever.

P is also automatically engaged when you turn off the car in D or R, or when you open the driver's door while the vehicle is stopped. Once in D, the transmission automatically manages the gears based on the selected driving program, accelerator position, and speed.

If you want more control, you can switch to manual mode by pushing the lever to the right (or using the paddle shifters on the steering wheel). To stop, press the brake, engage P, and activate the electronic parking brake.

Never engage P while the car is in motion, as it can damage the transmission.
