Video tutorial

The video explains how to reset the engine control unit (ECM/ECU) on your car, often without tools. The ECM stores long-term data and learns driving style, adjusting performance for maximum efficiency.

If the engine light comes on, there may be an electrical issue: before replacing parts, resetting the ECM helps determine if replacement is truly necessary. The two most common methods are: disconnecting the battery for 2-15 minutes, then reconnecting it, starting, and driving for at least 10 minutes to allow the unit to relearn; or removing the fuses related to the ECM (found in boxes in the engine compartment, glove box, driver side, or boot, depending on the model).

After the reset, let the car idle for at least 10 minutes. The reset is also useful after modifications or replacements of components (fuel filter, knock sensor, climate, etc.), as the ECU is sensitive and may conflict with new parts.

A third method is to use an OBD2 scanner to clear error codes. The reset does not damage the car and should always be done after any replacement.
