Checking Mass Air Flow Sensor Functionality

Model: Renault Clio Clio 2, MK 2 - Years 1998-2005

The so-called mass air flow sensor is actually the air mass meter: it is a sensor mounted downstream of the engine air filter box and communicates the volume of air drawn in to the engine management ECU based on the engine speed. You can check the functionality of this sensor using a simple voltmeter. Set the reading scale to 20V, intercept the connector of the mass air flow sensor, and connect the probes to the two larger gauge wires (black and purple): upon ignition, you should measure 12V of power; it is recommended to use pins or small nails to insert into the wire connections to facilitate measurement; keeping the negative probe in place, check the output voltage from the other two wires: with the engine off, nothing should be measured; with the engine on, the voltage should increase with engine speed.
