When the Smart instrument cluster indicates three lines, it means that the gearbox has anomalies and cannot engage, otherwise an "N" would appear. To get to the problem, you need to get an OBDII reader, which we can easily find on any platform of e-commerce for a few euros. The most common cause of failure is damaged wiring from the controller to the shift motor plug. These wires touch the intercooler housing and abrasion occurs there, perhaps a frayed wire.
