How to Unlock a Subaru Automatic Gearbox?

When the battery is completely flat and the car is parked in a garage with the front very close to the wall, making it impossible to open the bonnet, but the gearbox is stuck in "P", you can manually unlock the gearbox as follows: get a small screwdriver and remove the small plastic cap located at the top left of the gear lever surround. Then insert the screwdriver into the hole beneath the cap (press the brake pedal throughout the procedure) and apply slight downward pressure with the screwdriver. At this point, you can manoeuvre the gear selector even if the engine is off and possibly shift to "N" to push the car.
