To replace the timing chain on a Toyota 1.4 D-4D engine, first remove the engine from its housing. This allows you to loosen the bolts securing the valve cover and the nut holding the crankshaft pulley.

Next, loosen the bolts securing the side panel of the engine block, under which the timing chain is located. By removing the chain tensioner, you can reduce the tension on the chain, slide it off the sprockets, and replace it with a new spare part.
