The reasons why roof racks are noisy

In this animation, we are explained the reasons why roof racks are noisy: first of all, the air flow encounters the front part of the bars, passing over and under them forming vortices; if the bar is streamlined, the vortices will be smaller and the noise less loud. The optimal shape is rounded in the front and elongated in the back, called wing-shaped, which prevents the flow from producing vortices, as shown in the table. If we have square bars and do not want to change them, we can install a deflector, which will redirect the air flow, or wrap an elastic cord around the crossbar to disperse the flow. The simplest system is still to remove the bars if we do not use them. A second cause of noise is due to poor installation; in fact, in the photo we see wing-shaped bars mounted upside down! Other noises can be caused by gaps that are created between the bars and the objects being transported, or by the lack of some seals, creating the "whistle" effect. Also, when purchasing bars, remember that protruding crossbars are definitely noisier than integrated and flush ones. If our car has roof rails, remember that crossbars are less noisy if moved as far back on the vehicle as possible.
