The risks of underinflated tires

This video tells us about the risks of underinflated tires: it is a dangerous and also expensive thing. Braking distances increase due to the smaller contact surface; steering response becomes less precise and there is a greater likelihood of both understeer (the car goes wide in corners) and oversteer (the rear of the car slides); the risk of aquaplaning also increases, as the tread cannot drain water sufficiently. There is also a risk of "tire bead unseating", meaning that the tire could come off the rim in a corner or during a very abrupt maneuver, causing total loss of control. Rolling resistance requires more energy, and therefore more fuel is needed to move the car; the tire wears irregularly, much faster on the sides. Natural causes of pressure loss include: osmosis (natural air loss through the tire), temperature fluctuations, stresses such as potholes and irregularities.
