The start & stop system is a technology designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions (especially CO2) during urban driving. As explained in the video, in the city, there are many stops (at traffic lights, in queues, at stop signs) during which a traditional engine remains unnecessarily running, consuming fuel. The idea is simple: turn off the engine when the vehicle is stationary and restart it when the driver is ready to move. However, it is not just a simple switch; it is a complex system managed by the Engine Control Unit (ECU): for the vehicle to turn off, it must be in neutral, with the engine at operating temperature, the battery sufficiently charged, and the climate control not demanding excessive effort. The restart is immediate and requires a specific action from the driver; press the clutch pedal for manual gearboxes or release the brake for automatic gearboxes. The starter motor is enhanced for this service, and the battery is of a special type: EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) or AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat), designed to withstand deep discharges and frequent recharges.
