This video explains how a clutch works and its components: the clutch disc is made of friction material that connects the engine and gearbox. It can be of two types: rigid (without springs) or with damping springs (which cushion jolts). Another component is the pressure plate, also known as the release bearing, pressed by the diaphragm spring to compress the disc against the flywheel, which can be standard or self-adjusting, compensating for disc wear. The third component is the thrust bearing, which can be hydraulic (if operated by brake fluid) or mechanical (with a cable). The last component is the flywheel, which can be single-mass, thus traditional, fixed to the crankshaft, or dual-mass, consisting of two masses connected by springs: it is more delicate but significantly reduces vibrations. How does it work? Engagement is achieved by the diaphragm spring pushing the disc against the flywheel, transmitting power to the gearbox. Conversely, disengagement occurs by pressing the pedal: the bearing compresses the spring, separating the disc from the flywheel. Symptoms of a worn disc include a 'spongy' pedal with slippage during acceleration. A broken dual-mass flywheel causes abnormal vibrations at idle, with metallic noises.
