This video explains simply how the clutch mechanism works. There are three components: the flywheel, the clutch cover, and the clutch itself, which is an inorganic material disc (similar to brake friction material). The clutch cover rests on springs, the disc "disconnects" from the clutch, thus eliminating friction and the gearbox stops turning (consequently, the differential and wheels also stop). However, the flywheel continues its movement because the engine keeps running. When you release the clutch, everything re-engages.
