How to assess the wear of your car's clutch? If the clutch "grabs" when starting, it means the clutch is worn and no longer engages properly with the flywheel. Another symptom: if you are stuck in traffic and feel pain in your foot or leg, it indicates the clutch is stiff, requiring significant effort to hold it down.

Additionally, try pressing the clutch with the engine off. If the pedal moves smoothly, all is well; if it sticks or returns abruptly, it is worn. Another test: when driving in fourth gear at about 2,500 rpm, accelerate and gently press the clutch: if the engine immediately drops in revs, the clutch is good.

If the engine continues to rev up and then returns to normal, the clutch is worn.
