Adding Brake Fluid When Levels Are Low Is Not a Good Idea

If you notice that the brake fluid level is low, adding more is not a great idea, as there are only two reasons why this might have occurred: a leak in the system (which you would have noticed from the brake pedal behaving strangely) or the brake pads being worn down. If the thickness of the pads decreases, the space inside the system increases, causing the fluid level to drop. If you add fluid, when you then change the pads, the excess fluid would spill out. Brake fluid (commonly but incorrectly referred to as oil) is highly corrosive and could damage the system; it should therefore be bled.
