The main mistake to avoid is mixing different types of coolant; the second is using only water, which can corrode the heads and boil prematurely. Also, allowing the coolant to age too much is a serious error. Remember that after changing the coolant, you must carefully bleed the air. Do not use sealants as a permanent solution, as they can block the heater core passages; do not ignore small leaks: a drop can become a hole over time; never reuse old clips, but use new ones; an invisible leak lowers the boiling point. Pressurise the system when cold to find cracks or faulty joints. Do not rely too much on the temperature gauge; use an OBD reader for the actual temperature. Use OEM thermostats that can highlight overheating; frequently check the condition of the expansion tank; listen for the fans: if they do not turn on, it indicates a fault. Finally, the radiator cap must always be in good condition.
