Consequences of a Damaged Radiator

A radiator that has taken hits, even if seemingly minor, can cause a series of issues: the radiator has fine aluminium fins between the tubes; stones or debris can bend or crush them, reducing cooling efficiency. Usually, this is not an immediate problem.

The immediate issue is coolant loss, with puncturing of the vertical fins of the radiator. The engine overheats because the coolant can no longer dissipate heat, and you may see steam coming from the bonnet.

You must stop immediately in this case, as you risk seizing the engine, which can lead to warping of the cylinder head and damage to the turbocharger. Never open the radiator cap when the engine is hot! The system is under pressure, and the risk of burns is severe.

A damaged radiator should not be underestimated. The cost of replacing the radiator, while significant, is never as costly as replacing the entire engine.

Also, have the electric radiator checked, as it may have suffered damage as well.
