In addition to protecting occupants, car manufacturers have developed systems for the external safety of the vehicle. One example is the active bonnet: when the front sensors detect a collision, the rear portion of the bonnet (closest to the windscreen) lifts up. The aim is to better absorb the impact with a pedestrian.

In the event of a collision with a pedestrian, the rear of the bonnet raises in a matter of milliseconds. This creates a larger deformation zone, which better absorbs the impact energy, reducing the consequences of the accident (primarily the risk of injury to the struck pedestrian).
