LED Car Bulbs and Approvals: Let's Clarify

LED car bulbs are becoming increasingly common, but not all are legal. Most LEDs on the market are 'off-road' and not approved for road use. Confusion arises because even approved LEDs require careful compatibility checks. First, open the bonnet and look for the approval label on the headlamp. It is usually a code with an 'E' followed by a number (e.g., E1, E4, E13). This code identifies the type of headlamp. Only headlamps with this label can fit approved LEDs. Even if you purchase an approved LED bulb (e.g., OSRAM LEDriving), the headlamp must be on the manufacturer's compatibility list. If your headlamp is not on the list, the approved bulb will also be illegal on that vehicle. Find the approval number on the headlamp. Then: download the compatibility PDF from the OSRAM website (or your chosen brand); search for your car model and headlamp type; if the headlamp is listed, you can fit the indicated LED. Approved LED packaging includes a certification sticker to apply to the headlamp or keep on board for inspections. Fitting a non-approved LED or one on an incompatible headlamp can result in penalties and, in case of an accident, insurance issues. Always carry out the necessary checks before purchasing and installing.
