What are the signs of wear on shock absorbers? First, check for free play in the link, which means abnormal movement at the start of compression and return. Manually move the shock absorber shaft: if you feel "play" or clicks before the hydraulic resistance begins, it's a sign of internal wear. A shock absorber in good condition has smooth movement and consistent resistance throughout its travel. If you find oily residues on the outer surface, it's a sign of deteriorated seals: hydraulic oil is leaking, and the shock absorber is losing effectiveness. If the shaft is deformed due to severe impacts, the seal is clearly compromised. If the dust cover is damaged, it allows sand, dust, and debris to enter the shaft, accelerating seal wear. If you find corrosion on the outer surfaces, it's clear that corrosion is damaging the shaft and seals, causing leaks and seizing.
