How to Fit Snow Chains

Model: (Various brands) Various
Part: Snow chains

Fitting snow chains may seem easy, but try doing it in the snow at -6°C with frozen hands: you need to be clear about what to do. Lay the chains on the ground, ensuring there are no knots. Identify the centre and the tensioner (the piece with the elastic rubber part) that will be used to tighten the chain once fitted. Pass the hook behind the tyre, starting from the bottom, find the centre of the chain again, and position it under the tyre; the tensioner should be very close to its housing. Take the two ends of the chain and hook them behind the wheel at the top; use the hook to securely join the two ends. At this point, the chain is fitted; you just need to tighten it by passing the tensioner through the designated eyelet and securing it by pulling the elastic rubber part. After fitting the chains, drive 100 metres and stop to retighten them. The chain may have loosened slightly and needs to be tightened again. It's a hassle, but it's a crucial step for safety and to prevent the chain from detaching and damaging the tyre.
