If you want to check if your starter motor works, follow this correct procedure: connect a ground cable to the negative terminal of the battery; then connect another cable to the starter motor terminal and to the positive terminal of the battery. When you touch the positive terminal of the battery, it should activate, as it normally does. It may also produce some sparks, which is normal.
