In this video we can see how to test a starter motor with external connection cables to the car. We start with the test of the solenoid, attaching it to the poles of a common battery, as shown in the video.

If the solenoid starts when connecting the positive pole, then the starter motor is efficient. We then do the test of the starter motor: If we connect both terminals and apply a certain force to the positive terminal, then the starter motor should start, as it actually does.
