In this guide, we will see how to choose the right tyre for your car. The first help comes from your vehicle registration document, as page 3 lists all the tyre sizes that the manufacturer allows for your vehicle. These sizes must be followed; otherwise, you risk penalties during inspections. The first thing to check is the tyre diameter, and it is important to know that the load and speed indices indicated in the document represent the minimum values that must not be fallen below. For example, if the document shows a load index of 91, you can only fit values from 91 upwards; the same applies to the alphabetical speed code (except for winter tyres). The sizes can be found on the sidewall of the tyre and are read as follows: width/height/diameter/load index/speed. Another important piece of information printed on the tyre sidewall is the DOT, which indicates the week and year of manufacture: 3320 means the 33rd week of 2020. European labels provide important information: wet grip rated from A to G, where A is the best and G is the worst; rolling resistance (fuel consumption) rated from A (minimum) to G (maximum). Lastly, we have the noise level expressed in decibels, with the sound wave indication (1/2/3) and the value expressed in dB.
