How to Adjust the Handbrake on the Volkswagen Golf VI

To adjust the handbrake on the Volkswagen Golf VI (in this case, a 2011 model), you need to remove the central console. It is not necessary to completely disassemble it: just unscrew the screws to access the mechanism. Start by removing the cup holder by unscrewing the two screws. Then unscrew the two screws under the console and the side screw (repeat on the other side). At this point, push the console cover forward: it will remain in place but will give you access to the internal screws. Inside, you will find one screw near the seat, one in the centre, and one at the front. Once removed, lift the panel, and you will have access to the handbrake adjuster. This is a nut or screw that adjusts the tension of the cable. Turn it to increase the handbrake travel (clockwise to tighten). Reassemble everything in reverse order and check the handbrake travel: it should have 3-4 clicks of play.
