How the Digital Instrument Cluster Works in the Volkswagen Golf MK8 GTI

The digital cluster of the Golf MK8 GTI is specific to this version, but many layouts are available across all Golfs with a digital display. It consists of three circular elements: on the left and right, configurable secondary information, and in the centre, speed and engine revs. Below, the road is displayed with cruise control data and driving assistance. At the bottom, there is a fuel gauge with range and a cap indicator, a green brake light to press to start, a red P for gear lock, and a handbrake warning light. To change the layout, press the View button, which alternates the displays (navigation, driving aids, etc.) while keeping the set information. To change the contents of the two side dials, use the left and right touch buttons on the steering wheel, with haptic feedback and white light that turns off when the cluster is off. Pressing the side button opens the menu of selectable items; with OK, access the settings to check the desired items (navigation, audio, phone, speed, clock, acceleration, fluid temperatures, consumption, etc.). Other steering wheel controls include voice assistant, multi-level steering wheel heating, volume, and track change with dual function: swipe or repeated press. Volume increases more quickly with a swipe. The system is comprehensive and graphically updated; with VCDS, hidden functions can be unlocked. The cluster changes colour (e.g., red) based on the driving mode.
