Replacing Dashboard Light with LED Light

Model: Volkswagen Passat 3BG, B5 - Years 1996-2005

Using two thin spatulas, pry and detach the central air vents and disconnect the connectors linked to the two side lamp holders. Then, extract the lamp holders by pressing the retaining tab and pulling them upwards. At this point, you need to modify the lamp holders to replace the original T5 W1 2W bulbs with LEDs. Before explaining the modification, note that T5 LEDs with W1 fittings are available, allowing you to replace the original bulbs without any modifications. In any case, if you wish to modify the original lamp holder to install a traditional LED, you must remove the original bulb and cut the plastic housing to expose the contacts where the LED will be soldered; solder a resistor to the positive of the LED and ensure that the overall height of the lamp holder is maintained. To calculate the resistor value to apply to the LED, use Ohm's law based on three fundamental data points: the INPUT VOLTAGE (which in this case is 12V), the NOMINAL VOLTAGE OF THE LED (a fixed parameter for each LED), and the max mA you want it to draw (recommended 10mA or 20mA):

R = (INPUT VOLTAGE - LED NOMINAL VOLTAGE) / Amperes

Of course, you must solder the LED respecting the polarity on the lamp holder to ensure it lights up.
