Adjusting the Play in the Steering Box

Model: Volkswagen Maggiolino MK 1 - Years 1938-1980

Due to wear in the pinion-rack coupling, the steering box may develop play, causing the steering to respond with a slight delay. You can estimate this play by slowly turning the steering wheel left and right: you will notice that the wheel turns but the wheels remain stationary. If the wear is not excessive, the play can be compensated using the adjustment screw located on the steering box. Open the front bonnet and locate on the right side (when facing the front) a half-moon shaped cap: beneath this cap is the steering box reducer and the corresponding adjustment screw.
